Southern rock goes back to the origins of the rock and roll movement to innovators like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard who all came from the South. Drawing heavily from the blues, rock and roll redefined music causing an revolution that would sweep the world continuing up to the present time. The British Invasion and then psychedelic rock movement in San Francisco took rock music out of the south and to places like London, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York.
Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Band helped revive the southern rock movement in the 60's with music that would eventually define the southern rock genre. The Allman Brothers Band, heavily influenced by the blues and elements of jazz, quickly developed a very strong following. Even with the death of guitar legend Duane Allman in 71 they are still very influential with southern rockers. By the early 70s bands began to combine hard rock and heavy metal influences into the sound. Simple boogie shuffles and hard rock guitar antics combined with rebel ideology combined to define this subset of southern rock. Groups like Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, Molly Hatchet, and Black Oak Arkansas soon began to be heard on the radio. The death of several members of the band Lynard Skynard in 77 including lead singer Ronnie Van Zandt was a serious blow to the movement but it managed to survive and in some cases thrive after the tragedy. Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama released in 73 was widely regarded as the anthem of the movement.
Southern rock influenced groups far removed from its geographical and musical lines. Bands like Def Leppard of England and AC/DC of Australia as well as many others were influenced by the southern sound. Southern rock suffered a decline in the early 80's with the advent of new wave and hair metal but a few bands survived and flourished like ZZ Top of Houston Texas. Combining synthesizers with their heavily blues influenced sound they managed to become one of the most commercially successful southern rock band of the 80's. The Georgia Satellites scored a few big hits also and new southern bands began to use MTV as a vehicle for the southern sound.
Bands like R.E.M., Blind Melon, and the Black Crowes, advanced the movement combining it with hard rock to create a new direction in southern rock music. Southern rock is still alive although it has been all but absorbed by the hard rock resurgence of the late 90's.
